Living Wills; Student sailors rescue 49 Haitians

With all the Terry Schiavo stuff going on, please remember to do a living will. A related ethics article. I was reading up on locked-in states (paralyzed, but aware) and found this interesting book: The Diving Bell and the Butterfly by Jean-Dominique Bauby who was trapped in his body for 2 years.

I just saw an ad on NBC about their upcoming episode of Law and Order: Criminal Intent. It's a wonderful show, as are the other 2 in this family. What caught my interest was the fact that they are allowing viewers to decide the outcome of their next show. This is not so bad, but the viewers will be deciding whether or not a character dies, which is faintly reminiscent of the decadence and fall of the Roman Empire, where the audience in the Coliseum chose the fate of gladiators with a thumbs up or thumbs down.

We have a new pet. We sighted a new animal that Elizabeth had never seen before. It reminded me of an experience from many years ago:

I had a share in a shore house and my housemates were talking about the size of the rat that they had seen on the way to the beach. Later that day, we walked the same way and I noticed that it was not a rat, but a possum. (City people do not get out to nature much.)

So we've named our new friend Peaty the Possum. This then led to a discussion of the relationship of possum and opossum and then if they are related to rats or raccoons. (like one of our other friends, Rocky Raccoon) BTW, possums are part of the marsupial family (genus?) and raccoons are related to bears.

So in closing, in my search for raccoon information, I blundered on an alternate spelling of our cat's name, Couscous, which is the spotted Cuscus.
