Harwich, Mass. — James D.R. Harder, a New York actor, died on Friday, Jan. 9, 2009. A graduate of the Buckley School, St. Mark's and Princeton, he had resided in Harwich for the past 10 years.

Jim is survived by his beloved wife of 48 years, Dorothy; a daughter, Elizabeth; son-in-law, Mark Ameres; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

As an actor, he appeared in more than 130 stage productions, many television shows and movies, and made more than 3,000 commercials. He was always tickled when Cape residents recognized him as the Big Fig from the Nabisco Fig Newton commercials of the 1970s.

There will be memorial services in Cape Cod and New York City.

I was transfixed as a child by Mr. Harder's impression of "Big Fig" during the 1970's ... and, ironically, that image of him and the jingle he sang came back to me recently, three decades later. I found the Fig Newton clip on Youtube and now, after researching to learn more about the actor, I am saddened by the coincidence of Mr. Harder's recent passing. I feel as if some spiritual resonation from him touched me for a "Big Fig" reprise and swan song. R.I.P. James Harder.
